Ready, Set, Riesling


Nothing makes getting ready more fun than great company.  This past Saturday, that meant an Alsatian Riesling…and what great company she was.  Although I’m partial to German Rieslings (I blame fond memories tasting there…), the 2009 Réserve I tried over the weekend was excellent, and I highly recommend it.

I was in the mood for something white, so I asked the clerk atPascur Fine Wines and Liquors of Williamsburg to help me out, an action I always advocate unless you know exactly which wine you want.

I ended up with Wilm Vineyard’s 2009 Réserve Riesling ($15.99) , a traditional Alsatian variety that’s completely dry but has a very floral aroma.   I thought the Wilm had a particularly tart bouqet, but on the palette it was refreshing and light….Ideal for sippage when you’re straightening your hair, or perhaps with sole or a mild goat cheese.

After enjoying the Wilm, I was inspired to read up on Rieslings, especially after learning that rieslings can be heavily planted with little negative effect on quality–so keep drinking because nobody’s running out.

Riesling Uncorked:

Major regions: Alsace, France (generally more dry)

Rhine, Germany (wide range from sweet to semi-dry)

History: Nobody really knows where exactly this grape comes from, but it’s been being cultivated since 800 A.D. (Sounds like their motto was, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I approve.)

Fun Fact: Rieslings dominate when it comes to German wines, covering over 50,000 acres of land, the equivalent of 37,812 football fields.
